Yes, he's right.

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I like this quote.

"...Compassion diminishes fright about your own pain and increases inner strength. It gives you a sense of empowerment, of being able to accomplish your tasks. It lends encouragement.

"Let me give you a small example. Recently, when I was in Bodh Gaya, I fell ill from achronic intestinal infection. On the way to the hospital, the pain in my abdomen was severe, and I was sweating a great deal. The car was passing through the area of Vulture Peak (Buddhataught here) where the villagers are extremely poor. In general, Bihar State is poor, but that particular area is even more so. I did not even see children going to or coming from school. Just poverty. And sickness. I have a very clear memory of a small boy with polio, who had rusty metal braces on his legs and metal crutches up to his armpits. I twas obvious that he had no one to look after him. I was very moved. A little later on, there was an old man at a tea stop, wearing only a dirty piece of cloth, fallen to the ground, left to lie there with noone to take care of him.

"Later, at the hospital, my thoughts kept circling on what I had seen, reflecting on how sad it was that here I had people to take care of me but those poor people had no one. That is where my thoughts went, rather than to my own suffering. Though sweat was pouring out of my body, my concern was elsewhere.

"In this way, though my body underwent a lot of pain that prevented sleep (a hole had opened in my intestinal wall), my mind did not suffer any fear or discomfort. It would only have made the situation worse if I had concentrated on my own problems. This is an example from my small experience of how an attitude of compassion helps even oneself, suppressing some degree of physical pain and keeping away mental distress, despite the fact that others might not be directly helped.

"Compassion strengthens your outlook, and with that courage you are more relaxed. When your perspective includes the suffering of limitless beings, your ownsuffering looks comparatively small."

Fic: "Turning Point" (George/Angelina, NC17)

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Title: Turning Point
Pairing: George/Angelina (past George/others; past Fred/Angelina)
Rating: NC17
Words: 3300
Theme: Confession, though it turns out here that while the confession and the sex are concurrent and related, it's not really that the confessing is a kink.
Warnings: This isn't cheerful fic; it takes place a few weeks after Fred's death.
A/N: Canonically, Angelina goes to the Yule Ball with Fred; Jo's post-DH family tree has her marrying George. Here I am playing with the notion of, okay, so what if the Yule Ball was the beginning of a Fred/Angelina relationship that was casual and then eventually more serious, and with the issue of what, then, would happen between George and Angelina in the weeks following Fred's death. Thanks to [info]emiime for the read-through and for fixing my inexplicable incompetence with quotation marks.

1. I am the least patient poster of fic ever. Daily Deviant fic is done and beta'd, and even has a title (!) and I'm all cranky that I must wait 2:40 more to post on my day. *rolls eyes at self*

2. Unrelatedly, I like when an exchange has not even started yet and I already completely win. What, you ask, do I mean? Go here to see Glock's Smutty Claus signup, my comment, and her drawing in response. *\o/*

Politcs.

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I've run across a couple posts on my f-list this week about people tired of reading posts about politics. I hit post number three this morning, and now I'll say something.

There's a lot in this journal. For the last five years I've been posting about fanfiction, school, Buddhism, meta, doctors, commander fuzzhead, gaydar reports, ice cream, jazz in the park, my apartment search, car break ins, my family, and politics. I went through my tags and learned first that, I need to be a little more consistent and watch the typos, and second, that I post mostly about fanfiction, followed by school, followed by politics.

Or as one of my tags reads, politcs.

I figure all of you do what I do when I hit a post I don't want to read -- skim. During the Democratic convention I grew awfully tired of ObamaObamaObama posts (yes, I'm voting for him, yes, it got repetitive). My down-arrow key solves that. Occasionally I run across a political post that cause me to stop, blink in horror... and then I move on. Chances are I wouldn't like this person's taste in shoes either, but it's their personal space, they can wear what they please, and fortunately their taste in shoes has nothing to do with their fine fanfiction which is what I read for anyway. Skim, skim, skim.

I'm certainly not going to suddenly cut tag my political posts. Why would I do that? I wouldn't ask that of you. Besides, I want you to know what I think!

But in case it gets repetitive, here's the short form. Then you can go back to skimming my political posts, which, if you've friended me, you've probably been doing for years.

Democrat or Republican? Democrat. I would cheer if a hunter took out Cheney.
Obama or Hillary? Hillary, even though I've never liked her, but Obama's good enough.
Health plan? Hillary's!
Gun control or gun rights? Surprisingly, gun rights. I prefer the government fear its citizens. (WG points out that a handgun doesn't mean much against an F-16.)
Pro-Iraq war or Anti-Iraq war? Live with a military analyst. Anti-Iraq war for its sheer military stupidity. Will believe the success of the troop surge if it continues to be a success in January, since most of the killings in Baghdad were purges by Al-Maliki and his cronies.
Al-Maliki? Corrupt bastard who will likely be hung in the next 20 years.
Offshore drilling? No. Let me quote my favorite senator, Maria Cantwell: "The US has only 8% of the world oil reserves. We can't drill our way to energy independence."
Drilling in the ANWR? Hell no.
John McCain? Hot-headed loose canon but I kinda like the guy. Do I think he'll make a good president? Oh... hahahahahaha!
Sarah Palin? For PTA chairwoman. In hell. Or that cult she belongs to, which sounds like a close approximation.
China? Scary. Current owner of our manufacturing base, thanks to the WTO types (I include Bill Clinton in this), soulless corporations, and eight years of George Bush.
Tibet? Deserves its country back.
The economy? We're in deep shit, largely due to, 1) Bush's massive deficit spending hurting the dollar, 2) utter corruption in the housing industry due to lack of regulation, 3) huge tax cuts which have helped my capital gains but hurt the future of the country.
Globalization? Good for corporations, bad for me.
Housing crisis? Am I the only one who noticed these were the same institutions who touted Enron?
Oil prices? High because of Bush's deregulation, not supply and demand. Which is why the trickle of oil ten years from now from the offshore drilling will make no difference.
Net neutrality? The future depends on it.
India? Mixed. This is my field, so I understand India. Not too happy with our service sector being shipped there because, one-- jobs. Two-- India has always some of the worst service in the world.
Global warming? We're so fucked.
Gay marriage? Does that even need to be a question? *g*

Now WG's defrosting the fridge so, gosh, looks like we have to eat all the popsicles.

I'm sure you've all seen this already, but it's worth checking out in case you haven't

Gloria Steinem on Palin.

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Ah, Gloria Steinem. I don't always agree with you, but this time you are so very right.

Palin: Wrong Woman, Wrong Message

It's insulting. A woman with close to zero experience nominated for the vice presidency? The Republicans want a second first lady.

Palin's experiencing her political honeymoon right now. But wait till people find out about her book banning, her view that the Iraq war is a "task from God," and the $22 million debt she left in tiny Wasilla.

The antithesis of a feminist candidate.

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I break with most feminists on some key issues, but I'm still a feminist.

I've been baffled at the choice of Palin. Her experience consists of being mayor of a town of 9,000 and governor of a state that has fewer residents than many cities (at 670,000 Alaska's entire population is little more than the population of Seattle).

Obviously she's just on the ticket because she's a woman -- but why her?

I looked on Wikipedia and there are certainly female Republican senators. There's Kay Bailey Hutchison who according to Peggy Noonan (former speech writer for Reagan and conservative commentator) was one of the top contenders. There are women Republicans in the House. Palin is certainly a conservative, but as [info]rabidfan mentioned, there are plenty conservative women out there. Yes, true.

They picked Palin for her looks, sure, because she's young. They want to get rid of the "old wrinkly guy" label McCain got saddled with among young voters after Paris Hilton's reply to his campaign ad ("then that old wrinkly guy used me in his campaign ad, so I guess I'm running for president!").

But I've come to the conclusion they picked Palin because of her lack of Washington experience: she's a symbol, a throwaway. After the election, she will be a total newbie, dependent on them for her political contacts.

They won't have to contend with a (Republican) woman with real power, with her own agenda, and her own constituency.

They want a woman they can put away in bubblewrap when the election is over.

ETA: Making Light is taking apart Palin's "community organizers" crack. Yeah, I bet she doesn't like the community organizers since they almost got her recalled by the city council for firing the librarian who refused to ban books as Palin wanted. Community organizers. Because heaven forfend that we have a democracy.

Fish out of water.

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Typed as I watched Palin's speech:

Welcome to amateur hour. She's totally out of her league. She's not used to being on camera and keeps twitching her hands in a weak sort of hammer motion. Her voice is nasal and strangled. She's not very dramatic as a speaker and has the pedantic manner of a first grade teacher. Her hair is in her eyes. She keeps smirking at her own jokes.

She can deliver a cutting remark. But falls apart when it's supposed to be inspiring. How is she able to kill a section on McCain's torture and survival?

A well-written, should-be-stirring, but poorly delivered speech. She knows it's dying. Her manner is scared and growing dispirited. She's not able to hide it either, she just doesn't have the experience. The audience seems more professional than her.

Ah. They've trotted out her family. That works. What a cute baby.

McCain just came out. Oh, what a relief to see him. Here is a pro who belongs at this level.

Palin is a fish out of water. More like a city council member than a governor. I guess Alaska's politics is pretty low-key and local. There's no way this woman could handle beltway politics.

Hey, a friend met Rick Anderson.

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Cool. I just heard that a friend of a friend was working up in the arctic circle when an MGM television crew stopped by their cooking camp.

Apparently how it works is that they fly people up there, set up a camp, and then anyone who's doing anything in the arctic goes that camp for supplies and food.

MGM was filming Stargate Continuum.

She met Rick Anderson and the entire SG-1 crew. I'll let you know if I hear any anecdotes.

Cut YouTube video. )

Mike Murphy (former McCain advisor): You know, because I come out of the blue swing state governor work. Engler, Whitman, Thompson, Mitt Romney, Jeb Bush. And these guys, this is all like how you want to (inaudible) this race. You know, just run it up. And it's not gonna work.

Peggy Noonan (former Reagan speechwriter): It's over.

Mike Murphy: Still, McCain can give a version of the Lieberman speech to do himself some good.

NBC's Chuck Todd: Don't you think the Palin pick was insulting to Kay Bailey Hutchinson, too (inaudible)

Peggy Noonan: I saw Kay this morning.

Mike Murphy: They're all bummed out.

Chuck Todd: I mean, is she really the most qualified woman they could have turned to?

Peggy Noonan: The most qualified? No. I think they went for this, excuse me, political [B.S.] about narratives and (inaudible) the picture.

Mike Murphy: I totally agree.

Peggy Noonan: Every time the Republicans do that because that's not where they live and it's not what they're good at and they blow it.

Mike Murphy: You know what's really the worst thing about it? The greatness of McCain is "no cynicism" and this is cynical.

Chuck Todd: And as you called it, gimmicky.

Ooops?

Going with bullet points, cause it's easier.

So, first the link to the photos:Dragon Con Pics

Bullet points of awesomeness in no particular order:
* spent most of my weekend with [info]obsessed_one and [info]zorathenne which was such a hoot it was just wrong how much fun we had
* got to hug Michael Rosenbaum aka Lex Luthor. The man is incredibly fit, felt fabulous under my hands and Zora teased him terribly.
* made Eric Avari flush with discomfiture in the VIP Green Room when I asked him to hold my girls for me, handed him their leashes and walked off to get them drinks
* met up with [info]leianora twice... that girl is an absolute doll, tiny as anything and dear stars can she eat. Where she puts it I have no idea. *huggles her*
* got to hang out with [info]juice817 who got video evidence of us hugging Rosenbaum. It's always good to see her.
* got gushed over my Matthew Lewis for some swag I got him last year at Con... it was rather funny to be the center of his attention while the people behind me were pushed off and told he was having a conversation with someone he knew and they would have to wait. *snerk*
* reconnected with Steve Scott who is now living here and we have plans to get together for drinks later this weekend.
* got both of my girls into the Green Room with me every night, despite not technically being a guest, just loved by them.
* got walked straight past a rather long line of people waiting to take a photo with Matthew Lewis on Sunday. Turns out there were two lines waiting for him, not just one and I sort of ended up in the middle.
* met [info]all_booty who treated me to dinner on Thursday and had me giggling my ass off.
* ran into a bunch of people I know from LJ and met in real life but haven't seen in years, [info]scarecrow, [info]creepigurl and [info]_jeremiad to name a few.
* met an author who is interested in seeing more of my art work as potential book covers. *bounce*

Hmmm, what else? I know I'm missing something, but I can't think of it right now.

Palin's message from the holy Elvis: "the Iraq war is a task from God!"

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Oh, good grief. Thank you, [info]vulgarweed, for bringing this to my attention.

McCain's token woman for his campain is a right-wing religious nutjob. And I'm speaking as a very religious Buddhist who reserves the term "religious nutjob" for the kind of cuckoo that advocates violence in the name of religion.

Or in this case, the Iraq war as a "task from God."

Speaking before the Pentecostal church, Palin painted the current war in Iraq as a messianic affair in which the United States could actout the will of the Lord.

"Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God," she exhorted the congregants. "That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God's plan."

She's not kidding. She's not just playing to the crowd. She's a member of a church group that believes wholeheartedly in Armegeddon and hopes it comes soon, by golly.

But in case you too feel that the Iraq war is a holy war, there's also her... oh, joy... book banning to take into consideration. No shit.

...as mayor, Palin continued to inject religious beliefs into her policy at times. "She asked the library how she could go about banning books," he says, because some voters thought they had inappropriate language in them. "The librarian was aghast." That woman, Mary Ellen Baker, couldn't be reached for comment, but news reports from the time showthat Palin had threatened to fire Baker for not giving "full support" to the mayor.

Retaliation against the librarian is an endearing touch.

The point of the Palin nomination is to secure the support of the far, far, far, far, far religious right. Lest we forget: her church is connected to hate groups gunning for a "racial holy war" and abortion clinic bombers. From 1992-1996 Palin was a card-carrying member of the "Constitution Party," a political group whose members crosspolinate with the racist League of the South.

I despise McCain for offering this woman up as a substitute for Hillary Clinton. I used to like the guy. I thought of him as different from the rest of the GOP, a tempermental fireball sitting uneasily at its head... round peg... square party. But this VP pick? Palin is one step up from offering us the bag lady who receives messages from Elvis.
